Request to shelve Tarmin Village for now seems wise to the Guild, recalling Surtac's first post in Tarmin:
"Remember to keep things kabiu, and keep in mind The Goddess' dictum to avoid discussing politics, religion or fashion with strangers."
Perhaps the temptation is unduly strong at this moment. Reconsideration possible at a later date. Let's enjoy some ☕️ and 🍰

The US is politically polarized, and it’s not going to be resolved on this board. I don’t see the value of debate on political matters here - there are plenty of other domains for that, and here we share a common love of reading and of CJC’s books. That is not to deny anyone’s arguments or views. I think we either bond over what we share and leave the rest for elsewhere, or we invite the heated differences in our society to do its thing here too.

One point made in the very early pages of Life as No One just really struck me - she alludes to the need for our definition of “life” to enable us to discern “life” in alien environments. I don’t remember many if any science fiction books focusing on the brave explorers of the universe puzzled by this question - they seem to be using the pornography definition she alludes to even earlier - but surely an ethical spacer needs to be able to identify “life” so as not to squash it.
Interesting. It seems like such a fundamental question as Walker poses it: why should we assume we will readily identify life when we encounter it? There is so much assumption and bias in the notion. And yet I too am scratching my head to think of a good science fictional example in which this difficulty is faced.
