Cyteen Destroyed

Well, I just got the word. Cyteen has been irrevocably destroyed. What was once whole and intact is now unrecognizable.
I leant it to my friend who was visiting in October. An old hardcover edition, with dust jacket. In January his home in Pacific Palisades was grievously damaged by smoke and toxic air. He sent me a picture today of what remains. Powerless, the only thing I could do was to send him a new copy.

Re: Cyteen Destroyed

That is absolutely terrible news.

I'm guessing from your description that it was an original Warner Books edition - if so then a sad loss indeed.

And a quick check seems to indicate it is still not available as an ebook, which is a real pity to my mind.

Commiserations to both you and your friend for your respective losses.

Much appreciated. It was indeed an original Warner Book. So sad that books, unlike Reseune leadership, cannot be generated again from code.

At least it didn't get chawed by the dog.

Yes, that would be worse. Especially for the dog, in the current condition of the book!

I had a signed copy of Ivril Gate all of a week, and the dog DID chew it!

Re: Cyteen Destroyed

yeah, that's the reason I don't lend books, I'll buy a cheap copy and give that away. IF they return it, so much the better.

I usually only lend a copy I don’t care about. But this is an old and dear friend. And I have another Warner hardcover, in much better condition. Oh well, sad but much to be grateful for.

Re: Cyteen Destroyed

It's the puppy stage that seems to be most dangerous to books.

Most recent victim here was my copy of Peter Fleming's Bayonets To Lhasa courtesy of a ten month old Viszla.  Luckily only minor damage to spine and dustjacket - it's still readable.
