A friend started her dishwasher and left the house for 3 hours. Came back to find it had caught fire, burned a hole in the floor, then luckily its pipes melted and the water flooded the fire. Due to the smoke damage she has had to move out.

That sounds absolutely terrible.

We had one a couple years back which regularly leaked for no apparent reason - later traced to a manufacturing fault and replaced under warranty.

It's a strange world.  Let's keep it that way.

Oh no!! That's terrible.  I've heard of clothes dryer fires, but never a dishwasher....I hope they're able to find another place.

Fortunately she has good insurance coverage. It is going to be about 6 months for the house to be habitable. Any appliances with vents have to be replaced because of the as from the fire. The insurance company is planning to sue the dishwasher maker.
Moral is -don't leave the house if an appliance is running!

Wow, what a bizarre and horrific occurrence! Good advice! (You never know, if she’d stayed home and been there for the fire, you never know how that would have gone….thankfully she’s unhurt!)

Several years ago daughter was leaving for work when she smelled smoke. Dryer fire, her teenage son was asleep upstairs. If she'd left five minutes earlier. . .No one in the family leaves the house with appliances running any longer.
