I'm "taking a break" from reading by checking up on things on the 'net. Makes SO much sense.....

I suppose I should go back to bed...((I can't wait to see what you've got Spence-ji!))

And wedja/wedji! That's wonderful and mildly disturbing at the same time. One humbly suggests Herself might not actually disapprove... wink

New Post Re: basic Atevi/English webpage There are some very bizarre coincidences between actual languages. For instance, the French word for 'seal', the aquatic animal, is phoque and is pronounced like the f word. The French word for 'pushed' is poussé and sounds like . . . well . . . I think you can figure that one out. And in the Canadian French dialect 'swimming pool' sounds like something you don't want to do in a pool: piscine.

So if there are a few accidental coincidences between Ragi and English, well that's just how it worked out. I am not putting any deliberate ones in, though I did 2 or 3 in the hani language.

New Post Re: basic Atevi/English webpage Kabiuone, I am not in charge of the project. But, I do welcome you to this thread. What I am doing is the vocabulary, as I said, poofing it out. But the others on this thread are the ones that are doing a lot of the analysis. That is that part I need the most help on. I could do it myself, but that wouldn't be nice or quick. And we want it to be both. So, if you want to make any notes on the grammar right now, it would be very helpful.

For instance, what parts of the sentences mean what. Several of the posters have made suggestions in the earlier part of this thread. I suggest you add to that then I can put those in the vocabulary.

Nand'Spence, what's the state of your part of the project? One eagerly awaits news, though doesn't wish to bother you if project is going slowly or if real life is interfering...

Have some  to help the studying!

New Post Re: basic Atevi/English webpage New words that appeared in Pretender ---
Did tai (father, papa) and ami (mama) get onto our lists? I don't remember.
(pages 227-228, Cajeiri is talking to his father, and about his mother.)

Ami is probably a bit baby-talk, like mani. I can't tell about tai.

Edited for formatting.

One is sure there are more than three major collaborators. Closer to a dozen, I think. Not all are equally talkative.

Spence, what form is the database in now? A genuine database program?

Griffin, the database Spence is speaking of is the first draft of additional (randomly generated) words to fill in the gaps. Perhaps by now, the second draft, since he has been making some manual adjustments.

Don't worry, Griffin and KabiuOne and other newcomers, there is still plenty of work to be done. It will be a monumental job fine-tuning the grammar and vocabulary so that all the known sentences and phrases fit their proper meanings.

Is the listing at Rodlox's site up to date, so Griffin can check whether we missed anything? Seriously, Griffin-ji, don't be intimidated by having the listing on a website. We are still finding words and phrases that have slipped through our nets.

Can the database be exported to a word processor document, just to let people read it?

(As one tries not the think of the connection between, say, daja (lady) and daj- (to wiggle) ).

I'm surprised that some words I would expect to be related are assigned separte roots: 'office (position)'/'official'; cardinal numbers (1, 2, 3)/ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd).

You now see the effort it will take to make this presentible. It would help if those who are doing the grammatical analysis would continue and suggest morphological bits for the grammar. Other wise, I'll have to do it all.

It is interesting to see it at this stage.

So some of the "redundant" roots may get weeded out eventually?

Grammar will definitely help. (I've got to nerve myself to get caught up on that thread.)

nope.

"Pharoah" is the Hebrew pronounciation of PER-AA, which means "the Great House."

...which would be like referring to President Bush as "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue".

honestly, I've never heard of that one....but it sounds rather like "apnu" (aka Anubis, psychompomp(sp) of the dead).

My apologies, my friend.

The point of my asking was not to do a crossword puzzle or write a report....it was instead to demonstrate that there are some concepts which have no exact translation (like the Ancient Egyptian neteru, which were divine beings, yet not "gods" as we call them nowadays).

New Post Re: Griffinmoon'aiji "It is of great importance that you accomplish this task or grave consequences will occur."

might be a translation of "you should do this" without the word should.

Any concept can be translated from one language into another, however, on may use a very much longer sentence in one if the vocabulary is not conducive to the task. For instance, try discussing building an igloo in the most common language of the pigmy tribe, or a desert to a Polynesian [all beach and no ocean].

One young African girl, upon her first time drinking water with ice in it, cried that it was 'hot!' She had never seen ice before nor had she ever felt cold. Try discussing "Finity's End" with a pre-Colombian Inca. I am sure he would think you were discussing gods and demons. And that Pell was some vast island over the waters.

Those are examples from the same species. I am sure between species, it would take a lot longer sentences, but still be possible to explain alien concepts.

Having recently had reason to do some writing using the Ragi newspaper script, I have developed a few questions. It would appear that there may be a preference for writing English phonetically.
What will we use for a silent "e" that happens at the end of a word? (Should we use anything?) Currently, it appears that silent final "e"s are dropped in the writing. ie: "huge" gets written "hug". Could get nasty doing this, do we rely on context only?
What about long "u" as in "use" or "you"? The glossary in Foreigner only gives "u" as "oo" (look, book, took) which is different from "oo" in "too" and no way covers things like "ou" (your).
Ragi so far gives us the umlauted "a" (father) & a long "a" sound. What about a short "a"?
As far as mangling English into Ragi script, I've found a large number of "nd" in English. Although I can only think of the word "nandi" as the only atevi word we have so far that uses it. Is it possible/necessary to create a seperate character for it? The glossary only goes so far as to use this combination to illustrate the use of " ' " in giving two consonants seperate sounds in a word. Same thing holds for "nt" in English.
Has anything been thought about doubled consonants? A quick scan through my spreadsheet of collected words only shows 3 words with any doubled consonants. At the minute, the letter characters are getting written twice.
What should be used for the English "x"? Should we go with using a 3 character thing for "eks"?

We currently have one letter each for O and U, for their Ragi sounds (that is, long O and long U). We don't have anything for short O or short U, nor short E or the A in cat.

Quote:as I use "xh" for "j" (pronounced more as 'zh').

Ah, and I was guessing it was pronounced like "chi", almost an H sound ...

Actually, ZH is one of the "foreign" letters in the Ragi font. That's foreign as in Mosphei', or English, or anything else non-Ragi.

"X" = ks works for "x" in the middle of a word. What about in the beginning? (ie: explain, examine?). Off the cuff, I suppose using Ragi "eks" would work.
The other thing I wondered about what used to be called "the schwe-sound e". Forget it as an English-ism? Stick with the established "e" & have fun deciphering it? Institute it as a foreign character?

Then they will pronounce each of the vowels in their 'pure' form: a = ah, e = ey, i = ee, o = oh, and u = long oo.

We might do the some of the same with transcripting Mosphei words into Ragi.
