Alliance Ascendant, the third book in the Hinder Stars trilogy is scheduled for November 2025 for hardback and ebook. This is from Locus magazine's Forthcoming Books list.
No cover art online that I can find.
I was wondering what the title would be. Great choice.

Not too surprisingly, given her health struggles, AA will be delayed. I asked what the status was, as it's no longer on the forthcoming books list (had been for Nov 2025), and CJ replied:
"We're not there yet. I had some effects from the most recent anesthesia that I'm working through, We're talking about starting it, and very, very much want to get to work -- we've got the notes."
I am not quite sure how to read this --- whether they're re-starting or have not yet begun the actual writing. At any rate, my optimistic guess is publishing in summer 2026, but more likely end of year or start of 2027.

Ah well. So it goes.
Thanks for the update.

Now even more worried about whether we'll get the next Foreigner book.

I hope that if/when CJ hangs up her word processor, Jane will continue to collaborate with her and write and publish Foreigner and others (evidently Jane has been more involved than we knew, and is now getting official recognition in the latest books). There is a tradition for doing this. For instance, the Darkover books were continued after MZB (yes, I'm aware of the issues), and many of them were quite good.

Also Anne and son Todd McCaffrey with Dragonflight et al, Frank and Brian Herbert in the Dune sequence and I'm sure there are other examples.
And outside the SF ghetto, further examples exist in other genres: Lee Child and son with Reacher; David Cornwell (John Le Carre) and his son Nick Harkaway with the George Smiley spy universe. Not to mention the officially sanctioned additions to Ian Fleming's James Bond novels from the likes of Kingsley Amis and so forth.
