Re: Alliance Unbound - the Spoiler Thread Version

Speaking of JR, what is his relationship to Mum?  Page 73, "He was the second  captain of that centuries old name that Mum had had the audacity to lay on him.  Captain James Robert Neihart: *Gaia's* first captain, the one to defy the EC and give ownership of the interstellar ships to the crews."  Mother? Grandmother? It must be some direct lineage, given the way names are held and bestowed.

On another note: for sheer fine writing, read the visit to the garden carefully.  There's an elegant inside out feeling of what it would be like for people who have lived on ships and stations all their lives to experience in some small way what a planetary environment would be like.  I found it interesting and magical, partiularly on the second and third reading.

"You must be mad," said the Cat, "or else you would not have come here."

Re: Alliance Unbound - the Spoiler Thread Version

I can't answer the Mum relationship question.  That's another search topic for my next re-read - I'll put it on the list.

I agree with you about the garden visit descriptions - they're beautifully evocative.  I also just love the way it slowly pushes the illegal trading scenarios out of the shadows and under an unexpected spotlight.

Re: Alliance Unbound - the Spoiler Thread Version

Thank you for this.  I have seen other versions of this elsewhere, though this one does seem to have a bit more detail in the earlier sections. It helps confirm an earliest possible date for the Alliance Rising and Unbound books, but at the far end with the start of the Company War, we don't yet know which of the Alternate Version have been in play so far, do we?  I'm going to have to study this again closely.

Re: Alliance Unbound - the Spoiler Thread Version

this was reposted by Ton Dellaringa on WWAS on Nov 30, under the apologies thread. More info there. I wasn't up to speed when I posted the link, and wanted y'all to see it as it's relevant info.

Re: Alliance Unbound - the Spoiler Thread Version

Thanks again for that link and the context.  I'm going to start another slow re-read of AR/AU as a background research activity to see what else shakes out this time around.  I'm sure there'll be stuff I've missed so far.  There always is.
