I've been pondering the date issue too.

Ok. My thinking on the date question is this:
1. We have a hard date for the founding of Union and the start of the Company War at 2300.
2. We also know from elsewhere (exactly where I can't remember) that both Finitys End and Dublin were launched in 2281.
3. Allow a couple of years at either end to cater for ship and route shakedowns at the start, and then Cyteen politics at the other end and we end up with about a 15 year window for the action in these two books.
Thoughts, anyone?

I need to review the A/U timeline (/edit, nevermind, it ENDS in 2300).
Of course, continuity is not herself’s forte.

A post from the old site by smartcat, in 2019. Oddly, Cyteen is missing.I'd assume it goes after Second Company War and before (or early in) Union post-war
Here is a list Jane put out earlier this year:
As requested: an Alliance/Union universe timeline.
Events leading up to the First Company War: Hinder Stars
Alliance Rising
Events leading up to the Second Company War: Sol System
Heavy Time
Hellburner
End of the second war:
Downbelow Station
Sol Post War: Sol's expansion toward Ursa Major stars rather than Barnard's (Tau Ceti)
The Pride of Chanur
Chanur's Venture
The Kif Strike Back
Chanur's Homecoming
Chanur's Legacy
Union Post War:
Forty Thousand in Gehenna
Regenesis
Alliance Post War
Merchanter's Luck
Rimrunners
Tripoint
Finity's End
***
And BTW, the rumored/promised (by CJ) Allaince/Union history has never appeared.

Thanks for that reminder, mahe. Some people here may not have seen that, and it does make a useful overall framework for a more comprehensive Alliance-Union timeline.
Some of the books do have hard dates embedded and I have been able over the years to work up a more detailed specific timeline of events in certain books and speculate about others as new books appear. This book is no different in that regard - more possible answers but also more questions raised.

Ok. It has been a few more days, some of which I have spent in frantic re-reading or skimming of other AU books to remind myself of ... things.
Does anyone want to talk about the elephant in the room? I think it could be quite spoilerific for other existing books and limit possibilities for another book in this sequence.
You do all know what I'm referring to here, right?

I have not yet read either of the Alliance books. But just want to comment that I believe - and please correct me if I am mistaken - the famous comment about Earth having found intelligent civilizations/aliens in another direction, seemingly referring to Chanur - occurs in Cyteen. That would plausibly place Cyteen after Chanur, and in Union Post War.

Star, you are absolutely correct. I think you and I may have had this discussion before. The alien Compact is explicitly mentioned by name in Cyteen. And that book gives us hard dates for other events that help to bookend a timeline for the Chanur adventures.

Precisely. And yes, we have had many illumining and enjoyable discussions of the mysteries that emerge from Cyteen!
