I very much enjoyed Translation State as I love all of hautdesert's work, and I also enjoyed Starter Villain, but IMO it's not top shelf, I agree. I had Amina al-Sirafi on my to-read list. The others were not on my radar, but that doesn't mean anything.

A quick update on In Ascension.
I'm 2/3 of the way through it and thoroughly enjoying it. I'm finding it a slow thoughtful read with a lot of depth to it, and I'm very surprised at some of the previous books I've read that it's reminding me of along the way.
I'll put a a separate thread when I've finished it.

Finished "Some Desperate Glory" by Emily Tesh. An original and cutting variation on the "young person in war school" genre, with a strong commentary on the Golden Age "Humans are actually better than all those aliens" theme. There are some really dark moments, including violence and suicide, but the story is good and inventive, with many, many bright points. Recommended.
I'd put it about equal with Translation State for 1st place for the Hugo. If I was voting, I'd put it first.
Tesh is new to me; she won the 2020 World Fantasy Award for her first book, so glad to find her.
And Tesh wins the Hugo for best novel. Very well deserved, a must read.
T. Kingfisher wins for best Novella, and should win for best acceptance speech. Sea cucumbers.

And our own Hautdesert won Best Series for "Imperial Radch", and second place for best novel
