Mospheira and the space humans

I discovered this excellent video of a French dance company interpreting Gloria Gaynor's "I will survive"...

... and then I realized that the song could be a theme song for Mospheirans upset about the refugees and the return of the ship.

[blockquote]

At first I was afraid, I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side
But then I spent so many nights thinking how you did me wrong
And I grew strong, and I learned how to get along

And so you're back from outer space
I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed that stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I'd have known for just one second you'd be back to bother me

Go on now, go. Walk out the door
Just turn around now 'cause you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye?
Did you think I'd crumble?
Did you think I'd lay down and die?

Oh, no, not I
I will survive
Oh, as long as I know how to love I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
And I'll survive
I will survive, hey, hey
[/blockquote]

"And so you're back from outer space ... Weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye..."

Thought about this way, the emotional logic of the anger of some humans regarding the ship refugees, although irrational and immoral in the bigger picture, can be sort of understood.  It actually strikes me that this must seem very alien to atevi, because man'chi doesn't work this way.  It may in fact encapsulate the core difference between humans and atevi: "as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive" *despite* the other, and resenting the other.  Indeed, early on in the series as I recall, Ilisidi drew the analogy of the undeserving relatives returning over the hill wanting a share of the hunt -- that is a resentment atevi understand, but that's not the conflict that Mospheirans have with the ship-humans.

Re: Mospheira and the space humans

An interesting perspective.Perhaps the Ship people, on returning to Alpha, expected an active station full of people they could dominate and commandeer. The Mospheirans, on seeing the ship returning, think "they're here to dominate us and make us into people who will serve the ship's needs without question or hesitation".

Mospheirans are survivors. They made a risky choice, and most survived the poisonous native  food sources. Enough survived the war. They figured out a way to live without reference to the ship. The ship comes back and expects welcome and loyalty. The islanders think "we survived without you" and we are DONE WITH YOU and your needs and expectations of domination. We are DONE with that. Except for the Human Heritage people who want to embrace the ship as a means to their domination of their fellow Mospheirans who actually want to stay on an Atevi world.

And the Atevi, seeing all this, are expecting an awakening of not-quite-dead-enough manchi of islanders towards Ship folk. Their examination of Bren makes perfect sense in this context. The Atevi need to be sure where human loyalties lie.  It is the resentment without loyalty, the urge to contact with a missing portion of humanity without allegiance forming that Atevi can't figure out.

Mospheirans survived without the ship, and the ship people can't quite understand how or why that happened. Like I said, you have an interesting perspective, bringing up one more aspect of the emotional envionment that CJ creates in these books.

I do hope to see some of the possible turmoil on Mospheira when the bulk of the Reunioners land.
