Re: What have you been reading lately?

I have not heard if that one, Surtac, but with those two authors I must rectify the omission!

Re: What have you been reading lately?

I think KSR, Stephenson and Gibson are all good writing about feelings and relationships as well as sci fi, and Welis and Leckie are as good as Cherryh in doing both as well. Perhaps the conclusion we must reach is that good writers can write good books that encompass the human condition while also speculating about what ifs, and both men and women can be good writers and the reverse is also true

It's non-fiction, Kokipy - a series of essays I believe concerning the nature of what SF/F actually is.

Oh, and on that other topic, it's worth remembering the story of how and why CJC adopted the nom de plume that she did, just quietly.

Re: What have you been reading lately?

On The Rouse: my husband is a vet and also a trumpeter. For several years he has played taps at a big church in NYC as part of their Veterans Day memorial celebration. He was just telling me about his preparations and it made me think about The Rouse.  So I gave him a tiny synopsis of the book. As a matter of fact, there is a two minute silence after he plays taps, and then he plays (wait for it) the Rouse, which is the British revelry, which causes all British soldiers to rouse
I mean, I know that’s what’s going on in the book, but wow.

Re: What have you been reading lately?

Yes.  As a former RAAF air cadet many years ago, I knew of the terms usage in that Commonwealth military  context, but I was not aware it was also a subtle reference to the Last Judgement in Christian dogma.  (I just discovered that while refreshing my old parade ground memories from years past.)

And I note that the novel has just seen the Goldsmiths prize being awarded to Mieville.

Re: What have you been reading lately?

Thank you, mahe.  That was excellent.

And I'm pleased to note that my interpretational gleanings from the book so far seem to be not too far from what the author had in mind.  At least I seem to be heading in the right direction.
