Interesting read
. They don't talk about WHAT one reads. I for one have read any number of books that don't relax me at all. At least there was a mention of correlation/causation.

That's a good point. It also begs a follow-up question: has anyone else here noticced a change in what they have been reading laately?
I certainly have, but I'm not sure how or why it actually occurred. Further pondering is required ...

I believe in the benefits and value of reading, while remaining agnostic on the brain mechanisms approach. So often I see what I would term scientism: the effort to legitimize a conjecture by wrapping it in the language of science. I’m not completely convinced that we understand the various neuroscience observations well enough to be sure how these really correspond to mental phenomena and to behavior. I don’t question the motives of the authors - and admittedly this piece is about the research, not the original paper itself - but the piece strikes me as a little breathless…
But to Surtac’s question, my reading is struggling a bit to survive the onslaught we all face: the scourge of device addiction. I can't quantify how much being online or on my device costs me, but it’s a lot. And I read so much that comes into my “personal feed” from one source or another….not that that material isn’t worthwhile, but it comes at a the expense of some reading time. I am fighting hard to establish better strategies to claw back my attention and my time.

The past few months my reading has been about 95% pure escape and comfort. I haven’t read the article in question yet, although I will now go do that, but it seems to me that when you derive pleasure from reading, and intellectual stimulation, there has to be a correlation with health in general
at anybrate, it is good to be as happy as we are reading and taking about reading, as we have done here for so many years.

A month ago I was blindsided by news of major health problem which will need several months of therapy. I find myself rereading favorite books that give me a sense of comfort I feel like they are old friends that will always welcome me. Sentimental? Perhaps, but there is nothing like book to take me away from today's woes.

Smart cat, I hope all is well and will be well. Similar news prompted my comfort rereading these past few months. I am toying with a Foreignor reread, except that I have read and reread all of the CJC works so often that I can practically recite them.
