I will say this because it’s starting to bug me. I’m 70 pages in, and there is not a character to care about yet. My interest in fiction without interesting characters is a fraction of what it once was.

The premise is promising, and no spoiler because it’s immediately obvious: small brained spider-like creatures are accidentally uplifted to some higher capacity for intelligence on an alien planet just as humans are arriving. But you need more than a premise. I’m still hopeful.

I am reminded of when I first read China Mieville's Perdido Street Station, and it seemed like the first 200 pages were worldbuilding before the atual story started.  Fwiw, the first sympathetic characters for me in Children of Time were certain individual spiders.

I found Perdido to be much better the second time
