Ok, read the comments. I think CJC manages complex politics in the Dunnett mode.  It surprised me that none of the comments mentioned her.

The Lymond Chronicles are. certainly one of the things that would-be writers of fantasy epics should read!  I did not enjoy House of Niccolo as much, although I do not regret having read it.

Chom-ji, I started with niccolo and maybe for that reason I love those the best, (maybe it’s just that it is so much longer. And also, I think the focus on business was unique, whereas Lymond’s swashbuckling, while awesome, was not such a unusual setting), but Lymond always manages to pull on my heart the most.
