Star Trek voyager

I never watched this series.  But AOC told Colbert the other night that she became interested in politics because she and her father watched that one when she was a child, and she has realized that he encouraged her to watch that particular series because the captain was a woman. And she observed that  sci fi was the only genre - maybe in tv? at that time that displayed women in leadership roles.  I think that is fascinating. Of course authors like CJC have been putting females in leadership positions for decades.

Re: Star Trek voyager

I saw that too. Colbert offered up Janeway’s name unbidden

Re: Star Trek voyager

I think people forget that the original Star Trek series was very forward looking in pushing social boundaries as they were when it started. - multiracial and multinational crews etc.  Leonard Nimoy lobbying producers for better pay for Nichelle Nichols as Uhura was another example I recall.

Re: Star Trek voyager

I have vivid memories of moving from dorm common room to dorm common room  until we built up enough critical mass to seize control of the television so we could watch the original program - weather permitting as the reception was erratic.

Re: Star Trek voyager

When I started law school in 1976, my parents bought me a tiny black and white tv and every night while I had dinner I watched reruns of the original series, which I had also watched when the show originally came out.   It’s been a while but I have vivid memories of many of the episodes.  I never got into any of the sequels.- but perhaps the time has come

Re: Star Trek voyager

One dorm had a new fangled 'color' TV. Which because of the local peculiarities showed the image in shades of green and white!

Well some of the sequels are better written and acted than TOS, notably TNG. Though you may not initially have the same affection for the characters you knew back when, I came to feel that TNG was the best even after having great love for TOS

I feel the same, Star-ji. except that I like DS9 even better than TNG.

Re: Star Trek voyager

Star makes a very valid point, and I think it's fair to say that the trend has continued to more recent productions in the Star Trek universe.  I'm thinking here of Michael Chabon's involvement with the Picard series, and what I've seen so far of Strange New Worlds.  I like both of these quite a lot.

Meanwhile, over in the Star Wars universe, I don't think recent offerings have been anywhere near as consistently good, and in fact have been extremely patchy by comparison with the modern ST shows.
But that's just my opinion.  I could be wrong.

Re: Star Trek voyager

Serendipitously, last night I happened upon a doco on Oz national television station SBS called "50 Years of Star Trek" which talks about the shows cultural and social impacts amongst other things.

Here's the program info page but be aware it probably won't stream outside of Oz from this link.  It is however a US doco originally so those who are interested should be able to find it somewhere locally
